چکیده

Objective: To determine whether high concentrations of antibiotic “locked” into a central venous catheter with heparin would retain sufficient antimicrobial activity to inhibit the growth of organisms commonly causing catheter-related infections in patients undergoing hemodialysis. Methods: Cefazolin, vancomycin, ceftazidime (all at final concentrations of 10 mg/mL), and gentamicin (final concentration 5 mg/mL) were “locked” separately with heparin sodium (final concentration 5000 IU/mL) in central venous catheters. The catheters were incubated for 72 h at 37°C in a dark incubator. The solutions were then drained from the catheters and used for microbiological testing against organisms commonly causing catheter-related infections. Results: In all cases, the antibiotic–heparin solutions drained from central venous catheters after 72 h at 37°C produced zones of inhibition that were not different from those produced by antibiotic controls (at 5 mg/mL). Conclusions: Each of cefazolin, vancomycin, ceftazidime, and gentamicin locked into central venous catheters with heparin sodium had the ability to inhibit the growth of microorganisms commonly causing catheter-related infections and should be suitable for use in an antibiotic–heparin lock for further in vitro and prospective clinical trials.

اثر بلوک هپارین-آنتی بیوتیک بر پیشگیری از عفونت کاتترهای دولومینه در بیماران همودیالیزی: یک مطالعه کارآزمایی بالینی

Background and purpose: One of the most common complications of catheter in hemodialysis patients is infections and many methods have been proposed to prevent it. This study compared the effects of heparin lock-antibiotics and heparin to prevent infections in patients undergoing hemodialysis. Materials and methods: This single blind clinical trial included 122 patients who were randomly assign...

Stability of antibiotics used for antibiotic-lock treatment of infections of implantable venous devices (ports).

Antibiotic-lock is a treatment for catheter-related bloodstream infections in which a solution containing heparin and an antibiotic dwells in the lumen of the catheter or port. We tested the stability of vancomycin, cefazolin, ticarcillin-clavulanic acid, ceftazidime, or ciprofloxacin combined with heparin after incubation in vitro at 25 or 37 degrees C for intervals of up to 10 days by bioassa...

In vitro effectiveness of colistin, tigecycline and levofloxacin alone and combined with clarithromycin and/or heparin as lock solutions against embedded Acinetobacter baumannii strains.

OBJECTIVES To determine the in vitro stability and efficacy of colistin, tigecycline and levofloxacin alone or in combination with clarithromycin and/or heparin as lock solutions against biofilm-embedded Acinetobacter baumannii strains. METHODS Candidate antibiotics (colistin, tigecycline and levofloxacin) were investigated in vitro, either alone or in combination with clarithromycin and/or h...

In vitro Evaluation of the antibacterial activity of Platelet-rich Plasma against Selected Oral and Periodontal Pathogens

Background: Despite the availability of a wide range of antibiotics, bacterial infections are among important challenges for the healthcare system. Therefore, the introduction of new antimicrobial preparations such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) could be suggested theoretically as a preventive measure for bacterial infections. We aimed to evaluate the in vitro antibacterial activity of PRP again...

Evaluation of antibacterial activity of extract of Curcuma amada against Staphylococcus aureus

Staphylococcus aureus is an important pathogen and produces a widespread infection. Increasing usage of antibiotic for staphylococcus aureus infections has created antibiotic resistance and subsequently new antibiotics should be produceed. Medicinal herbs with antimicrobial activity have had important roles in traditional medicine. The purpose of this study was to determine the antibacterial ac...
